LEH
NUTRITION PROJECT, LADAKH, JAMMU & KASHMIR
Leh Nutrition Project was
set up in Ladakh by the Save the Children Fund (UK)
in 1979 as a supplementary nutrition project in selected
areas of Leh particularly in the south of Indus river
and some remote villages in the trans-singela area.
The organization rapidly marched towards an integrated
approach in supplementing government programmes in education,
health (allopathic and traditional), women's development,
rural development, social education and wildlife focusing
the remote and neglected difficult areas. Its innovation
in skill development and capacity building through vocational
training and workshops of the rural women folk, unemployed
educated and uneducated youth brought high laurels to
LNP.
When
the socio-economy of a particular target area and sustainability
of the infrastructure and programmes so followed were
seen perceptually to a certain satisfying level, LNP
redirected its resources to other needy areas. By the
year 1996 in 17 years, LNP withdrew its activities from
45 villages followed by major restructuring in consequent
to fresh situation analysis if the area and the organisation.
LNP
its now involved in :
Child
Focused/Activities
Inspired
by the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child, LNP
works for Child participation through adult sensitisation
and awareness on child right besides development of
children's knowledge and skills through trainings, workshop
and theatres at villages, Block and District level events.
30 children's committees for village Development (CCVD)
are formed on democratic norms in Leh District championing
rights of children to a happy, healthy and secure childhood
towards a better would for today and for the future.
Children's participation in all decision making processes
and development concerning their lives right from the
grass-root level is thrust area and the CCVDs work for
better environment around them through beautification
and sanitation interventions besides work on protection
of cultural heritage sites.
Strengthening
ICDS
Better
early childhood care, pre-school education, better nutrition
to children and maternal health care inherent in the
Government Integrated Child Development Scheme have
extremely vast scope of further effective improvements.
Therefore, LNP is piloting 30 anganwadi Centres and
forwarding towards LEH District in due course. Training
of Anganwadi Workers and Community participation in
running of Anganwadi Centres are the main thrust areas.
We work on Development of Local tools, teaching aids
and dietary pattern suited to Ladakh atmosphere and
are the field where research and analyses are going
on. LNP is also nodal Anganwadi Training Centre Appointed
by J & K Government for Ladakh.
Community
school
The
situation of Ladakh villages and smaller hamlets are
scattered in an area of 57,000 sq. kms and are dotted
all around with variance of distances ranging 3 to 60
kms from each other. An isolated hamlet having less
than 15 children for school roll do not fit under Government
norms to get a Govt. school for them but their children
cant be deprived off their child rights. Therefore,
LNP opened 16 community schools for such small hamlets
since 1979 of which 8 have been taken over by the Govt.
by now and the remaining 8 are still being piloted by
LNP. This programme is tended to be joint venture of
the community, Govt and LNP by arranging teacher and
training, teaching aids and school building.
HIV/AIDS
LNP
is pioneering agency working on HIV/AIDS awareness campaign.
Now it is focussing towards increased awareness and
safer sexual behaviors through comprehensive education
on basic biology of human reproduction and the meaning
and physiology of adolescence thereby making young people
understand STDS, and HIV/AIDS in better way with changed
behavior and informed and mature way. More than 3,000
community leaders and students have so far been organised
in workshops and other events in the field.
Watershed
Development Programme
98%
population of Leh District is traditionally engaged
in agriculture activities. Activities in 36 Watershed
areas through LNP as programme implementing agency of
Government of India since 1996 are having miraculous
impact in the over-all economic improvements of the
village community. Construction of contour Dams at the
source to stock winter run off water for summer farming
has increased soil moisture and spring recharged besides
availability of abundant water to the farmers.
Passive
Solar Architecture
A
semi-nomadic population of 1248 souls belonging to 241households
living in a very remote and isolated pocket of Durbuk
Block in Leh District has peculiar problems. To improve
their living conditions 85 smokeless chullahs were distributed,
10 Green Houses, 10 houses retrofitting, 16 Compost
Pits, 24 Trench cultivation and 8 Lambing Sheds were
constructed for deserving households and locations.
These interventions will improve their poor housing
conditions, more survival of livestock, better health
status and more skill development in handicrafts.
Development
of Pashmina Goats project
Pashmina
wool is produced in Ladakh only in India that too in
Changthang plateau in the north east area of Ladakh.
LNP strives to increase pashmina production, which is
possible through inducting goats from non-pashmina growing
pockets to pashmina growing area.
So
far 260 such goats have been inducted and distributed
to the deserving poor nomads in Changthang by LNP covering
52 families @ 5 goats each duly insured with corporate
insurance company.
